I'd bet you were fooled by grungers. Generally, vast majority of teenagers is being fooled by current trendsters. It's much easier for a teenager to fit in, if he shares his taste in music with his mates.
I was 14, when Backstreet Boys were at their zenith, and it seemed the era of boybands would never end. Now, when I hear all the whiny Emo and "alternative" Pop-Rock, I must say I'd be glad, if boybands came back. At least, their music was melodic, and as a background it wasn't annoying...
