If you are talking about the backfire these cars do, that sounds like a gunshot.... its the Anti-Lag system for the huge turbos they drop on the cars

In Africa, they just about did. The first car through on a stage would be going slowly and pushing people out of the way, and deaths were all too common (say, a kid runs across the road, their younger siblings follow, and get hit). Or so I read in Gran Prix International late in the Group B era.

There's a device called "Bang" at the exaust outtake collectors from engine to turbo on most of rally cars that burns with an explosion all the post-combustion unburned gas every time you leave the gas pedal or change gear to avoid turbo-lag effect and keep the turbo charged . This produces flames and little explosions out of the exaust pipe and the tipical rally car "banging" sound.

You mean antilag? It actually hold the throttle body(excellerator) open at about 1/3, and retards the timing about 20degrees(variable) to stop the engine revving severely, whilst allowing the turbo to keep pumping through the open throttle. The backfiring is due to the timing being out by soo much, and doesn't effect the spool up of the turbo very much at all - Although it is known as a crowd pleaser!
